I raced a stock GTP against my '01 Camaro M5 w/K&N air filter, and I jumped way out in front off the line but his back bumper was at my front nose in the 1/4. What can I do to gain a car length in the 1/4? About how many tenths am I behind him. He also had three other people in his car and I had one friend with me.

For most street cars, a 1/10 of a second is about a car length. Assuming a trap speed of 86mph, and the GTP is 16.25ft long, he was around 0.128 seconds ahead of you if you were traveling 86mph through the traps.
Trap speed in a fairly good indicator of HP, but gear ratios etc also affect it too.
Another rule of thumb is every 100lbs you shave off, it worth around a 1/10th of a second. So you need to load his car up!

That's about right, I've noticed that keeping the gas tank low helps. A gallon of gas weighs about 10 pounds. You don't want to get rid of all the weight because a little bit of weight helps us plant our rear tires better
