http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/09/07/trademarks-pontiac-firebird-fiero-set-to-return/
It's no secret that General Motors is working on a new Pontiac coupe based on the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro. What's less certain is the name of the vehicle. GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz has referred to project with the GTO moniker, but some recent reports have suggested the Firebird name will be used instead. On October 6th, 2006, General Motors' "Firebird" trademark will be 'published for opposition' — a required step in the trademark process. While the automaker has long held rights to the name, the recent republication seems to suggest the nameplate could be revived. Meanwhile, the automaker also reregistered the Fiero name in late June. We can only imagine the name might be intended for the much-rumored Pontiac Solstice coupe. However, there's little evidence to back this hypothesis.

its bittersweet... the firebird might make an appearance but then what'll happen to the GTO? we'll be stuck with a Holden again  and if they make a firebird outta the solstice platform i'll go buy a mustang outta spite for GM.

the gto is a great car. everything about it is excellent. i think people who dont like it are the ones who havent ever rode in one or at least sit in one. when gm brought it back it was never intended to be the muscle car that the firebird was. thats somehthing alot of people misinterpret about it coming back. they are probably one of the best put together cars gm has ever built honestly.
and youre damn right im a bird fan!!!! i told my wife that when i die i dont want a casket to be buried in. just get me a nice 1st gen bird, put me in it, seal it up, and bury me in the car.

i agree with the bibbster on the GTO thing. i thought they were ugly as sin when they first came out. once the new hood got on the 05's ( i think it was 05 ) and i sat in one, and saw a few driving around, and REALLY looked at them i now love them. amazing cars, and for the price your stupid for NOT buying one.

An 06 GTO lists at $32k and you can talk them down a lot since they don't sell well. They didn't take over the firebird's spot like bibber and loser said. They are closer to a luxury GT car then a muscle car.
Anyway, back on topic. If they bring back the firebird with a 100k mile warranty :excited:

just saw a ad for it, 100K or 5 years. its about time, maybe now sales will go up a touch in the future. it was nice to see, alot of other companys offer it.

Chevy is my gig, not Pontiac. However, Like stated above the GTO is amazing. I've seen them stomp Mustang GTs like they were nothing, the engineering is very impressive and I beleive that's it's highly under rated.
</off topic>
I think that using the camaro platform to make the firebird would be great, just think of the competition :naughty:

friday night at 11pm??? damn, i barely started drinkin! wait till you get to college.
not to say i dont like the performance of the GTO. its awesome. i just dont like the fact that it looks like a last gen grand prix and it was just badge engineered. I remember when it came out... everyone was like "oh! it only took them 18 months to get it to production!" well yeah, no sh!t. they took a Holden Monaro, changed a few fascia things, slapped a pontiac dart on it and said "look at our new car!" they're fast, they ride nice, they're comfy... but i just dont feel the "aura" of a muscle car. just dont like 'em.

^^^What he said is completely true.
I like Firebirds, but I don't know if that's a good idea. GM needs to consolidate a little, and offering two cars that are basically selling in the same market on the same platform hasn't been a winning formula lately. Think back to when Mustangs were outselling Camaros and Firebirds combined.

well in that case why dont gm make the firebird totally different then the camaro for a change? offer the same drivetrain just a totally different body style and different options...i totally agree that they dont need two cars in the same platform i think they should come back out with the firebirds and be a totally different car then the camaro how would that sound?

It would sound like the '60s, when Pontiac actually had their own engines and options to offer. I know people today that hate 4th gens just because they say that they are not true pontiacs.
Think of this though, bibby said he would buy a new firebird if their was one, but i'm pretty sure he said he would not buy a new c0m3ro at all (sorry if i'm wrong bibster)

Ward's Auto World actually suggested that GM stop trying to act like a sole company (we've all seen those stupid lil GM badges on all the cars nowadays) and go back to the way it was in the 60's: GM was the holding company for a bunch of other companies competing with each other. they compete w/ each other which raises product quality, and the sheer variety of brands would match anything else on the market. why have a pontiac w/ a chevy engine? its an idea of ratios. look at it this way:
GM as one unit vs. the other big three: its a 1 in 4 shot(counting toyota) that the customer will buy the car
GM broken up vs. the others: its an 8 in 12 shot. that brings the odds to a 2 in 3 shot that the customer will find somethign they like.

Um......... Hate to break it to you, but the new Camaro was developed by Holden.... And the current GTO is dead after this year..... And they were talking about making a FIERO out of the Solistice Coupe.

yeah i said i wouldnt buy a maro until a few years after it came out. i would buy one at some point after the crazy prices dealerships are going to try to sell them at. now if there was a new bird, i would pay the price just becuase im a fool who loves firebirds and have no patience for waiting for things i really want.
tell ya what should happen....
keep the gto and let it go along with the maro.
bring back the bird, use the vettes platform (y-body iirc) do away with the IRS and make a badass bird on it! yeah its wishful thinking since the car would be crazily priced, but a guy can wish cant he?
or just let pontiac build thier own bird from the ground up, including a new motor. i wouldnt mind seeing a hightech version of the old S.D. 455 :D
