  • Whining Noise

When I hit about 35MPH, I start getting this steady whining noise coming from what I think is the wheel. The pitch of this noise increases with speed and is unaffected by RPM.

    Whatcha think? Wheel bearing?

    Re: Whining Noise

Wheel Bearing would be my guess... or warped rotor causing the rotor to rub but i wouldn't call that a "whining noise" exactly...

Yeah, this is a very constant, smooth whine.

Get it in the air and turn the wheels...

That will work. Sometimes a bad wheel bearing will heat up after a short drive too.

The noise doesn't start until I go over 35MPH.

                The tires are pretty old.

The pitch is probably a little lower than that 1K test tone you here on TV sometimes when they have the color bars up.

                  Re: Whining Noise

I've worked at tire shops before, sometimes when tires get old and start to wear down, they'll wear in odd ways and start to cause a low whine.... Does it get louder as you increase speed?

                    Re: Whining Noise

Yes, louder and higher pitched. Very noticeable too. The tires on the front are cheap and crappy too. Like some Nankangs, or something like that.

                      Re: Whining Noise

Yeah, your best bet to find out if it's a wheel bearing or tires is to throw it in the air and get the wheels going...if it's a wheel bearing it'll make noise...tires wouldn't if it's in the air....at least that's my .02 ... is the car handling oddly or anything like that?

Nah, it seems to handle fine. But then again, I just did all this suspension work, so if it is off, I probably wouldn't notice as much.

never asked, front or rear wheel? Doesn't sound like a differential whine, does it?

Not sure which wheel. I'll need to get someone to ride with me to listen closer. I'm not sure what a differential whine sounds like. I just had the diff serviced a couple weeks ago and the guy said everything looked fine.

differential whine is a low pitched, kinda drony whine, that advances with speed as opposed to RPM, it happens usually when the pinion nut backs off, or when the bearings go.... happened in my grandfather's silverado...it'll have a little bit of a whirring noise, not unsimilar to what a t-5 sounds like when you put it in reverse, just a little higher pitched.
